What is Impact Investing?

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) defines Impact Investing as:
"investments that are made into companies, organizations, and funds with the intention to generate measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return."

How Large is the Market?

Impact investments exist across a wide variety of products, asset classes and sectors.

According to the GIIN 2018 survey, on a global scale, impact investments under management are worth about US$228.1 billion. The majority of assets are invested in private debt (41%) and private equity (18%). A significant proportion of these assets are present across microfinance, energy and house sectors, with an increasing number of compact investments across the food & agriculture and healthcare sectors recently.

According to the Responsible Investment Association 2018 Trends Report, impact investments in the Canadian market totalled about $14.8B.
